They're not the fashion police, but the NHL is still cracking down on the state of players' uniforms.
The league's stricter enforcement on how players wear equipment — which includes jerseys, neckguards, visors and helmets — claimed its first victim on Thursday night, as Philadelphia Flyers forward Trevor Zegras was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for improperly wearing equipment.
Under new enforcement guidelines, a player must begin his shift with his jersey untucked. There will be no warning or penalty issued if a jersey rides up during the course of play, but it must remain untucked when a player next steps on the ice for his next shift.
One warning will be given before a two-minute penalty is assessed. Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, another infraction will lead to a misconduct.
“My jersey was tucked in before the shift,” Zegras said. “So after a warning, they said that's an automatic penalty. I started the game obviously with it tucked because that's how I usually play.”
Luckily for Zegras, his fashion faux pas did not harm his Flyers in their pre-season finale, as they topped the Boston Bruins 2-0. His penalty was officially scored as delay-of-game.
